PHOTON MULTIPLICITY DETECTOR (PMD)

at

STAR

The Photon Multiplicity Detector will be installed at STAR covering the region 2.3< eta < 3.5. It has a overlap with FTPC which gives the charged particle multiplicity in STAR. PMD will measure the multiplicity and spatial distribution of photons on an event by event basis. Combining this information with charged particle multiplicity PMD will address the following broad topics of physics:

  • Determination of the reaction plane and the probes of thermalization via studies of azimuthal anisotropy and flow.
  • Critical phenomena near the phase boundary leading to fluctuation in global variables like multiplicity and pseudorapidity distribution.
  • Signals of chiral symmetry restoration (e.g. DCC) through the measurement of charged particle multiplicity (Nch)in a common part of phase space and study the observables Ngamma and Ngamma/Nch with full azimuthal coverage and with momentum selection of charged particles.
