         Photon Multiplicity Detector (PMD)
CERN Test Beams

  » May-June 2001
PMD measures photon multiplicity and spatial distribution of photons on an event-by-event basis.

Photon Multiplicity Detector is a Pre-shower photon Detector suitable
for counting photons in high-energy nucleus - nucleus collisions. PMDs were
used in WA93 (S+Au at 200 A GeV) and WA98 (Pb+Pb at 158 A GeV) fixed-target
experiments at SPS-CERN. The detector was subsequently upgaraded to fit the
requirement of even higher multiplicity environment at RHIC. PMD for STAR
experiment at RHIC is presently being installed. Parallaly, the R&D for the
ALICE-PMD continues.

The development of the latest version of the PMD for A Large Ion Collider Experiment (ALICE) at CERN is at its final stage. In the process, different prototypes have already been tested with beams from PS/SPS at CERN. For the detail of these beam tests please refer to the links on the left.
