General Information
The
5th International Conference on Physics and Astro-Physics of
Quark Gluon Plasma will be held from February 8 - 12, 2005 at Salt Lake
city situated on the north eastern fringe of Kolkata (nee Calcutta),
India. A fest colloquium
will be organized on February
7, 2005 in honour of Professor Bikash Sinha to celebrate his 60th
birth anniversary. Salt Lake is a well planned new township divided into
separate residential and industrial sectors. Besides, academic and research
institutions, it also has a number of recreational facilities.
A
busy metropolis, Kolkata is very well connected with the world through
Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (popularly known as Dum
Dum Air Port). National Highways and Railways (Sealdah and Howrah terminals)
connect Kolkata to other Indian cities. The city transportation system
depends on trains, buses, taxis and an efficient subway link.
The erstwhile capital of British India (1772-1911) and at present, of the state
of West Bengal, Kolkata is located in eastern India on the bank of river
Ganges. Known as the cultural capital of India, Kolkata is the birth place
of modern Indian literary and artistic thoughts, Indian nationalism and
the blending of eastern and western cultural influences. The city exhibits
a level of unsurpassed intellectual vitality - the state of West
Bengal and Kolkata in particular is the home to all the Indian Nobel prizes
won in the fields of Literature, Physics, Peace, Medical Sciences and Economics.
The
lure of the mighty Himalayas at Darjeeling in the north, the virgin forests
of Sunderbans , the largest mangrove swamp in the world - with the ferocious
Royal Bengal Tigers and crocodiles on the prowl in the east, the huge waves
of the Bay of Bengal lapping the shores of Digha and Sankarpur in the south,
West Bengal is a great tourist attraction. Kolkata has a number of heritage
sites including the Asiatic Society, the Indian Museum (the oldest and
largest of its kind in India) and the Victoria Memorial. The National Library
is the largest library in India and contains a fine collection of rare
books and manuscripts. The Indian Botanical Garden near Kolkata contains
about 40,000 species of different plants. Besides these, there are many
other attractions in and around Kolkata. For further details, please log
